Twitter users call for #ISISMediaBlackout following purported beheading of US journalist

Social media boycott of Islamic State spreads after the alleged execution of missing journalist James Foley.

A campaign to mute the Islamic State’s social media transmissions has emerged following the release of a video showing what appears to be the beheading of missing American journalist James Foley.

Shortly after the release of the video on Tuesday, Twitter user @LibyaLiberty began using #ISISMediaBlackOut, urging people to stop sharing their online broadcasts. The hashtag has 11,000 uses in the past day. Foley’s sister is just one of many who tweeted asking followers not to watch or share the video of the alleged beheading.
