Authorities order police to seize historic warehouses in Recife, leading to confrontations with protesters.
Violent clashes broke out in Recife, Brazil Tuesday between local police and #OcupeEstelita protesters as government officials ordered the reclamation of the José Estelita Pier. Reconstruction of the city-owned property was disrupted in May by demonstrators demanding the historic warehouses be preserved. The attempted demolition was a part of “Project New Recife“, an ongoing effort to reshape the city.
The protesters, who have occupied the site since May 21, were dispersed by armored troops Tuesday morning.
