Birth control law upheld by Philippines Supreme Court

A controversial birth control law was upheld by the Philippines Supreme Court on Tuesday, despite opposition from the Catholic Church. It’s a victory for the government’s efforts to provide family-planning education and greater access to birth control. The law was initially suspended due to legal challenges from faith-based groups after President Benigno Aquino III signed it in December 2012. Supporters of the Reproductive Health law say it will help slow the country’s population growth of more than 2 per cent annually.  

A survey released before Tuesday’s ruling showed 77 per cent believed the law was constitutional. Online, Filipinos discussed the court’s decision using #RHLaw.
