SA protesters slam state broadcaster for bias

Opposition party accuses South African Broadcasting Network of rejecting its content in favor of ruling party.

South Africa’s public broadcasting network is facing protests from an opposition party for refusing to air its advertisement that calls for people to “destroy e-tolls”, a controversial road toll system. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) marched outside the South African Broadcasting Corporation, accusing them of bias towards the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party.

The advertisement titled, “Now is the time for economic freedom”, ends with a slogan saying, “destroy e-tolls physically!” The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) ruled against the broadcast, saying the advertisement violates its policy because it incites illegal activity and violence. Julius Malema, an expelled ANC youth leader and EFF founder, led protesters to SABC headquarters in Johannesburg.
