Filipino activists say #ObamaOut over military pact

Netizens raise questions over increased US military presence in their country.

Protesters in the Philippine capital of Manila rallied Monday against the Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement (EDCA). The 10-year defence deal signed by the Philippines and US on Monday would lead to increased US military presence in the country. It grants American forces “access to designated Philippine military facilities, the right to construct facilities, and pre-position equipment, aircraft and vessels”.

Demonstrators say the agreement will pave the way for the US to regain previously held base locations. US President Barack Obama, however, clarified they will not be reclaiming or establishing any military bases in the country.
