Supporters of seal hunt say it with a #Sealfie

Inuit and others disagree with talk show host’s $1.5 million donation to anti-seal hunting organisation.

American talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is taking heat from Canada’s Inuit community after her recent $1.5 million donation to an anti-seal hunting organisation. The funds were gifted to the Humane Society of the United States, which is known to be an opponent of Canada’s seal hunt. Online, many Inuit are calling for DeGeneres to reconsider her decision, emphasising that the seal hunt is part of their livelihood. 

In a video addressed “Dear Ellen”, 17-year-old Iqaluit teenager Killaq Enuaraq-Strauss explains what the seal hunt means to her community: “We do not hunt seals or any animal for that matter for fashion. We hunt to survive.” Watch the video below:
