New Zealanders to redesign their flag?

A referendum will be held to consider changing the country’s flag.

New Zealand is set to hold a referendum on whether or not to change its national flag. The current one features the Southern Cross star constellation and includes Britain’s Union Jack in the top left corner. New Zealand is still part of the Commonwealth, an international community of former British colonies. Prime Minister John Key, who said the flag represents a past colonial era, promised a vote on whether to keep the existing flag in the next parliamentary term.
