Turkish family seeks justice for Berkin Elvan, teen killed in Gezi protest

Parents allege prosecution apathy in investigation for tear gas canister death.

The family of 14-year-old Berkin Elvan, who died in March after being comatose for nine months, is seeking justice for his case. Elvan was shot in the head by a police tear gas canister at last year’s Gezi Park protests. More than 500 days later, his father says authorities have still not identified his killers or submitted an indictment.

Elvan’s father claims the policemen suspected of shooting his son at Gezi Park were shown in video footage, but prosecutors working on the case were dismissed.

The family recently launched a campaign on Twitter using the hashtag #BerkinElvanDosyasiNerede (“Where is Berkin Elvan file”). Many compared this shooting to recent cases of police brutality in the United States and around the world.
