‘Hamlet’ film adaptation on Kashmir praised and vilified

Kashmiris and others debate ‘Haider’, controversial Bollywood film set in tumultuous period of region’s history.

‘Haider’, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, set in Indian-administered Kashmir has been released to largely positive reviews in India, but not everyone agrees with the critics. Kashmiris and others on Twitter debated the film’s portrayal of the conflict in the 90s, when the Indian army suppressed an insurrection in the Kashmir Valley.

Co-written by Kashmiri journalist, Basharat Peer, the movie depicts the Indian army’s response to rebellion, showing protests and torture scenes. Many argued that this is the first honest portrayal of Kashmir in Bollywood cinema.
