Iceland plans ‘men only’ forum to discuss women’s rights
Following criticism of ‘men only’ gender equality forum, Iceland minister reportedly says women will be involved.
Does an all male forum to discuss gender equality actually promote gender equality? This is the question many Twitter users are asking after Iceland’s Foreign Affairs Minister Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson announced plans to host a men-only conference with South America’s Suriname to discuss women’s rights
.
In a speech at the UN General Assembly, Sveinsson said the UN “barbershop” forum, expected to take place next year, is intended to “bring men and boys to the table on gender equality in a positive way”.
Iceland is reportedly ranked highest in gender equality, which has left many confused about the prospective event.
