Fatal police shooting in Anaheim sparks anger

Outrage grows after the shooting death of an unarmed man.

Protests erupted in the US city of Anaheim in California after police officers shot a 25-year-old unarmed man on Saturday, July 21 during a chase. Details of Manuel Diaz’s shooting are under investigation and no clear information has surfaced as to what actually led to the incident.

One police chief claimed Diaz is a known gang member and was with two other men behaving suspiciously before police pursued them.

Police responded to protesters at the scene of the crime by shooting rubber bullets and beanbags in a crowd which included women and children. Several demonstrations have taken place since then to raise awareness of what some see as a pattern of police brutality.

Two police officers involved in the clashes have been placed on paid leave and the mayor of Anaheim has asked the attorney general of the US state of California to look into the shooting.
