Catholic groups challenge US over birth control

Healthcare mandate would require employers to provide insurance covering contraception.

More than 40 Catholic groups have filed lawsuits against the US government over a healthcare mandate that would require most employers to provide health insurance that covers birth control.

Catholic institutions claim the requirement violates religious freedom. Opponents say the real issue at hand isn’t freedom of religion but the political battle over women’s reproductive rights.

In this episode of The Stream, we speak with Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of Network; Janet Smith, professor of moral theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary; and Mary Rose Somarriba, chief operating officer of Catholic Information Center.
