When we reported on Spain’s print media a few weeks back – some of them young journalists themselves – came back to us with an important angle: that it is in the hardest of times that new forms of reporting can emerge.

Yes: top editors have been sacked; circulation has plummeted, thousands have been laid off: and for many, the mainstream press have weathered the country’s financial crash by losing its critical edge. But with crisis come paradoxes – and in Spain, a multiplicity of outlets have emerged that counter the mainstream from the inside or on its margins – 300 startups born since the 2008 crisis
