The Fabulous Picture Show

The Queen Has No Crown

More than 20 years of home movies from one Israeli filmmaker tell the story of a nation.

With his camera rolling wherever he goes, Tomer Heymann chronicles life as a young gay man in Israel whose family is slowly falling apart around him.

When three of his four brothers move to the US to seek opportunity and stability away from the troubled region, Tomer and his brother Barak (the film’s producer) stay to support their mother. Heartbroken, she feels that her sons have not only rejected her, but her country.

Tomer and Barak Heymann join Amanda Palmer, Al Jazeera’s head of entertainment, to discuss the emotional journey of putting their family’s life into a feature film for the world to see.

Luc Besson

Known as the central figure in the French Cinéma du Look movement, visionary director Luc Besson is best known for his striking visual style and strong female characters.

His latest film The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec is his first ever comic book adaptation, about an intrepid young tomb raider with a head for adventure.

In an exclusive interview, Besson discusses the themes and motifs that run through his body of work, and his long time collaboration with composer Eric Serra.

The Guard

Sergeant Gerry Boyle is an unconventional Irish police officer with a weakness for women and wild nights out, and a flagrant disregard for political correctness.

When an international drug gang is suspected of smuggling near his small coastal town, Boyle, played by
Brendon Gleeson, is paired up with a straight-laced FBI agent in the form of Don Cheadle.

John Michael McDonagh’s hilarious debut feature captures the quirky Irish charm that the rest of the world finds irresistible.

Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975

When Swedish director Göran Olsson went rummaging through the archives of a Swedish TV station, he did not expect to stumble upon hours and hours of rarely seen archive footage from the US’ civil rights era.

When he did, he put the best parts together, added a blistering soundtrack from American superstars The Roots and gave the world Black Power Mixtape 1967-75.

With interviews from activists such as Angela Davis and Stokely Carmichael, this music-infused documentary provides a fascinating and toe-tapping insight into the politics and struggles of the black power movement.
