The Italian foreign minister speaks to Al Jazeera about Italy’s long relationship with Libya.
Rapid developments in Libya and the rest of the Middle East have been turning that region upside down. Old leaders are out or struggling to to hang on and what comes next is increasingly hard to predict.
On Monday, world leaders attended a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva to consider these very issues. Several speakers used very strong words to condemn what is happening in Libya.
“Colonel Gaddafi’s attacks on his own people are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Gaddafi has lost the legitimacy to govern and it is time for him to go without further violence or delay,” Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, said.
Franco Frattini, the Italian foreign minister, speaks to Al Jazeera’s Teymoor Nabili from Geneva about the role of the international community in Libya, Italy’s close relationship with Muammar Gaddafi, managing the potential enormous flow of refugees into Italy, Mediterranean politics and supporting the Libyans.
