Riz Khan

Rwanda’s legacy

The Rwandan foreign minister speaks about the country’s challenges, plus hip-hop mogul and activist Russell Simmons.

The massacre of thousands of Hutu civilians has been documented in a recently leaked UN report that blames the Rwandan army for allegedly committing atrocities after the 1996 invasion of what is now the DR Congo.

Paul Kagame, the Rwandan president, has rejected the UN’s claims and threatened to withdraw its troops from UN peacekeeping missions.

On Wednesday’s Riz Khan show, we speak to Louise Mushikiwabo, the Rwandan foreign minister, and ask: How can Rwanda move away from its violent past, and how should it respond to new allegations of genocide?

Later in the show, we will look at the controversy surrounding the proposed Islamic centre near New York’s ‘ground zero’.

We speak to hip-hop mogul and social activist Russell Simmons. He also serves as chairman of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, an organisation that focuses on inter-faith relations.

This episode of Riz Khan aired from Wednesday, September 22, 2010.
