Riz Khan

Iraq’s uncertain future

How will the country negotiate the rocky road to political reconciliation as the US ends seven years of occupation?

Iraq is mired in a political standoff and security crisis as the US marks the official end of its combat operations on August 31, seven years after it invaded the country to get rid of Saddam Hussein.

Multiple bombings and shootings have killed hundreds in the last two months raising concerns about the capability of the Iraqi security forces.

Compounding those fears is a long-standing political dispute that has prevented Iraq from getting a new government nearly six months after parliamentary elections were held.

On Tuesdays Riz Khan we ask: How can Iraq resolve its political and sectarian differences; and what lessons – if any – has the US learned from its occupation?

Joining the discussion will be Adil Abdul-Mahdi, the Iraqi vice-president, and Michael Corbin, the US deputy assistant secretary of state for Iraq.
