Can India translate its financial clout into a stronger political voice on the world stage?

India is quickly establishing itself as a global economic powerhouse.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) ranks India as the 11th largest economy in the world with a gross domestic product of $1.2tn.

It contributes billions of dollars every year in developmental aid to many African and Asian countries and has been closely associated with the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

Yet it finds itself in the cold when it comes of full membership of major international groups such as the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Its efforts to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council have also been rejected.

Many say India has not been able to translate its economic strength into a stronger global political voice.

On Tuesday’s Riz Khan we ask: Despite its growing financial clout, why is India not as powerful a political force in the world today?

Joining the show will be prominent Indian politician Shashi Tharoor, a member of parliament for the ruling Indian National Congress. He also had a long and accomplished career at the United Nations.
