Turmoil over Iran

Are Western nations fuelling hysteria against the Islamic Republic?

Another war of words has erupted between Iran and the Western powers.

Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, warned during a visit to the Middle East that Tehran is moving towards a military dictatorship.

France says the Islamic nation has launched a “bloody repression” against its own population since last June’s disputed presidential election.

But Iran says it defends human rights and blames Western powers for meddling in its internal affairs.

Adding to the tension was last week’s statement by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, that his country was capable of enriching uranium to a purity of 80 per cent.
That prompted renewed calls from the West for harsher sanctions against Tehran’s nuclear programme.

On Tuesday’s show we ask, are western nations fuelling hysteria against Iran?

Joining the conversation will be Hooman Majd, the former adviser to two Iranian presidents, and Karim Sadjapour, an associate with the Washington DC based foreign policy think-tank Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

This episode of the Riz Khan show aired on Tuesday, February 16.
