Israel’s aims in Gaza

Riz asks what does Israel realistically hope to achieve with this war?

Watch part two

Israel took its war on Gaza to a new level over the weekend, sending thousands of ground troops into the Strip.

The land, sea and air assault has so far killed about 550 Palestinians and injured about 2,700. At least five Israelis – three civilians and two soldiers – were killed as well.

Diplomatic efforts to end Israel’s war on Gaza are gearing up as the Israeli military continues its air sea and land assault. Some see the moves by leading European figures as latent potentially ineffective.

French president Nicolas Sarkozy visited several leaders in the Middle East to push for a ceasefire, which so far has been rejected from both sides, Israel and the Hamas. There appears to be no end in sight to the conflict.

On Monday Riz asks: What does Israel realistically hope to achieve? Where does this leave the Palestinians?

We will be speaking with Harvard law professor and prominent Israel defender Alan Dershowitz, and independent Palestinian scholar Ghada Karmi.

This episode of the Riz Khan show aired on Monday, January 5, 2009.
