Paul Watson’s Sea Shepard Conservation Society battles mostly Japanese whale hunters [GALLO/GETTY]

For the past 30 years, Captain Paul Watson has been engaging in war on the high seas.

His war has nothing to do with empire-building or economics, but with what he sees as his mission to protect whales from their hunters.

The captain co-founded Greenpeace in 1971, only to be expelled from the group because he refused to renounce violence as a method to confront whaling. Thirty years ago he formed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and began his battles with mostly Japanese whale hunters.

His ship has been rammed as he makes anti-whaling declarations over loudspeakers, and he has allegedly been shot at. But nothing is slowing him down, and Riz will ask him about his life’s work on Monday.
