For Syrians a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights is key to any peace negotiations |
Is there a real chance of a peace deal between Israel and Syria?
Tricky negotiations may soon be underway for a deal that could return the Golan Heights to the Syrians. Turkey is playing broker between the two enemies in what seems to be the most public move yet for a resolution, though there are still many obstacles to overcome. Israel has insisted that Syria end support for Hezbollah and Hamas, and keep a greater distance from Iran. Syria wants to ensure a complete withdrawal from the Golan Heights.
On Wednesday’s Riz Khan we talk to Itamar Rabinovitch, the former Israeli ambassador to the US who headed Israel’s negotiation team with Syria from 1993 to 1996. He is joined by writer and experienced Middle East analyst, Patrick Seale and Syria expert Murhaf Jouejati, a professor of Middle East Studies at the National Defense University.
