On Wednesday, Riz talks to Prince Moulay Hicham Ben Adullah of Morocco. Labeled the “Red Prince” by the royal household because of his perceived ‘leftist’ views, Prince Hicham was third in line to the throne when Morocco’s King Hassan passed away and his cousin, King Mohammed VI, then just 35, took power.
Regional reform advocates held out great hope that Morocco would become an example of change and democratic reform in the region and Prince Hicham was among those calling for a new constitution—one that would limit the powers of the monarchy. His advocacy got him banished from the royal household.
Today he resides in Princeton, New Jersey and speaks frequently about the need for political and economic reform in the Middle East and the challenges posed by US policy in the region, the Iraq War, the ‘War on Terror’ and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
