Charles Taylor, the former Liberian president, is now on trial at the Hague for war crimes committed in neighbouring Sierra Leone.
Taylor is accused of selling diamonds and buying weapons for the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), a Sierra Leonean rebel group.
The former preacher was notorious for allegedly sanctioning the hacking off of arms and legs of his victims, as well as sexual slavery, rape and the recruitment and use of child soldiers.
