Former U-S President Bill Clinton called him “The greatest living economist.” This week on One on One meet economist and author Hernando de Soto.

He explains economics in simple terms… and yet manages to help developing countries find solutions to their complex macro-economic issues – with a focus on empowering the poor. Born in Peru, but raised in Switzerland, Hernando de Soto enjoyed an international education that he says holds in him good stead for his global challenges. De Soto has been a key figure in Peru – serving as principle advisor to former President Alberto Fujimori – before he was removed from power in 1992.

Known for his work on what’s called “the informal economy” Hernando de Soto’s book, The Other Path, drew the connection between economics and political development. While his thesis drew praise from academics, it led to several attempts on his life for vilifying the country’s guerrilla movements. Undeterred, de Soto passionately continues to tackle economic challenges as the President of the Institute for Liberty and Democracy, in Lima.
