What’s next for the US Supreme Court?

Following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a political row over her successor is brewing.

What will happen next to fill the vacancy on the US Supreme Court and why is it so important?

Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher explains.

“The Supreme Court is very important politically in the United States,” Fischer says.

“Many parts of legislation have been approved by the Supreme Court. If you think about marriage equality, which gave gay couples equal rights in the eyes of the law or perhaps parts of Obamacare, the Affordable Health Care Act, which were protected by the Supreme Court, and there are more issues coming that are very important, including possibly challenges to the abortion law here in the United States. So you see why the Supreme Court, the number of justices and the way it’s balanced, is so very important”.
