Bali sisters take on single-use plastics

Meet the founders of Bali’s ‘Bye Bye Plastic Bags’ initiative, who are leading the fight against single-use plastics.

Teenage sisters Melati and Isabel Wijsen started an initiative to reduce plastic bag use in Indonesia.

“Bye Bye Plastic Bags” was launched nearly 10 years ago when the sisters were ages 12 and 10 respectively.

Their efforts to educate local communities through education, campaigns and political meetings have turned them into household names in Bali.

Indonesia is listed as the second-worst offender for polluting the world’s oceans with plastic.

The country banned single-use plastics in June 2019 and plans to cut marine plastic debris by 70 percent within the next five years.
