Controlling malaria

The disease, one of the top three child killers on the planet, is a serious problem in Tanzania.

Malaria control efforts are under way at the Sengerema clinic in Tanzania.

As part of their daily routine, health workers at the hospital treat patients – including young children – suffering from malaria-related symptoms.

Malaria is caused by a parasite that is transmitted from person to person by a particular type of mosquito.

The disease presents a serious problem across Sub-Saharan Africa. And it costs the continent an estimated $12bn a year in lost productivity.

It is also one of the top three child killers on the planet.

In Tanzania, malaria deaths have been reduced by 50 percent in the past decade, but the disease still kills 60,000 Tanzanians every year.

The Lifelines team follows medical professionals working to control the disease in the region.
