What’s next for Venezuela’s political crisis?

The US announces more sanctions in a bid to force Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from office.

The US Vice President Mike Pence says Washington will stand by Venezuela’s opposition leader Juan Guaido “until liberty is restored”.

His message came when the two men met in Colombia at a gathering of regional countries. They are looking for a way to get President Nicolas Maduro to step down.

But Maduro’s refusing to go, and accuses the US of wanting to start a war in South America.

The UN Security Council, meanwhile, is holding another emergency session to discuss the month-long crisis.

What needs to happen next to break the stalemate?
