Is China nervous about Hong Kong’s recent election?

Beijing reiterates that calls for Hong Kong independence will not be tolerated.

Pro-democracy activists elected to the Legislative Council in Hong Kong are vowing to continue their opposition to the Chinese government.

China reacted to Sunday’s election by indicating that any talk of independence within the Hong Kong government or anywhere else would not be tolerated.

When 156 years of British colonial rule came to an end in 1997, Hong Kong was handed back to China under a “one country, two systems” agreement.

Communist leaders in Beijing have ultimate control but have promised to maintain the freedom and laws of the global financial centre for at least 50 years.
