Houthi coup: Make or break for Yemen?
Will the Shia rebels’ seizure of power help restore stability – or fuel further chaos?
After months of tightening their grip, Houthi rebels have asserted their political control of Yemen.
The group has proclaimed a formal takeover, hailing what it called a “new era that will take Yemen to safe shores”.
The Houthis say they intend to set up a 551-member national council to replace the existing parliament.
A five-member presidential council will then form a transitional government for two years.
But will the takeover help restore stability – or fuel further chaos?
