Does Mladic’s arrest open a door to the EU?
We ask if the capture of Europe’s most wanted man will improve Serbia’s chances of joining the European Union.
After 16 years on the run, Europe’s most wanted man has been arrested. Ratko Mladic, the former Serbian general, will now be extradited to the UN Tribunal in The Hague on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. He is the last major figure of the war in Bosnia to be arrested, after Slobodan Milosevic and Radovan Karadzic.
Does his arrest mean that the door to European Union membership will now be opened for Serbia? And will so-called international justice deter further crimes against humanity?
