Haiti’s cholera epidemic

How could this latest outbreak be contained in an already beleaguered country?

Experts are fearing the outbreak of cholera in Haiti. Nearly 200 people have already died and thousands are infected by the epidemic.

The United Nations is now concerned of a large scale health crisis if the disease spreads to camps sheltering those already affected by the earthquake that hit Haiti last January.

The quake left more than 250,000 people dead and over a million homeless.

As the country still struggles to recover from the earthquake, Inside Story, with presenter Hoda Abdelahamid, asks: How could this latest outbreak be contained in an already beleaguered country? And did the international commnunity fail Haiti?

Joining the programme are Craig Mauro, the Al Jazeera correspondent in Haiti, Salvano Briceno, the director of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), and Dr Lo Wing Lok, a specialist in infectious diseases.

This episode of Inside Story aired from Sunday, October 24, 2010.
