Sami al-Hajj, before and after his detention |
After seven long years, Sami al-Hajj has finally been released from Guantanamo Bay.
Unlike other former Guantanamo detainees in other Arab countries, Sami was greeted by the Sudanese president.
Preparations are also underway to celebrate his release.
Covered at length by Al Jazeera, footage of Sami’s return did not sit well with Pentagon officials who claim it is meant to influence public opinion.
Sami’s release coincided with Press Freedom Day.
A number of media organisations have noted many setbacks in the work of journalists worldwide and calls have been made to strengthen the rights and freedom of the media and the right to freedom of expression.
Inside Story, with presenter Imran Garda, discusses Sami al-Hajj’s case in the broader context of press freedom worldwide.
