Iraq’s neighbours met in Kuwait to discuss ways of improving security and stability in the country [AFP]

Iraq’s neighbours, along with other major powers, have met in Kuwait to discuss ways to help Iraq secure its borders and improve internal security and stability.

 

The conference was also attended by Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, and the foreign ministers of Iran and Syria.

Nuri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, urged neighbouring states to do more to support his country’s growing economy.

 
He also repeated a call for Arab states to provide more political and financial support, by re-opening embassies in Baghdad and writing off Iraqi debts.

 

Inside Story asks whether this move is meant to contain the Iranian influence in Iraq, and whether Arab countries are ready to re-open their diplomatic missions in Baghdad.
