We ask what impact the shortage of food will have on the millions who rely on UN handouts [AFP]

The World Food Programme (WFP) has issued an urgent appeal to address the increasing needs of the world’s poor.

 

The WFP says at least $500 million is needed immediately.
 
Since last June, the cost of fuel and food worldwide has shot up by 55 per cent on average.

That spells bad news for more than 73 million people worldwide who rely on the UN for food handouts.
 
And increased living costs also mean more people than ever will have to rely on handouts for their survival – putting the WFP under intense pressure.
 
So, what impact is the shortage having on the millions of needy people around the world?
