9/11 trials
Suspects to ‘plead guilty’ to charges of conspiring with al-Qaeda to kill civilians.
Five men accused of masterminding the September 11 attacks in the US say they will confess to the crimes.
The men are on trial in Guantanamo Bay where they have been held since their arrests.
Their move is being seen as a challenge to the US military to grant their wish for martyrdom as a guilty verdict in a jury trial would result in the death penalty.
The trial is being held even though Barack Obama, the US president-elect, is expected to go ahead with plans to close down the Guantanamo detention camp.
Inside Story, with presenter Nick Clark, discusses the legal basis of the ongoing military trial and the hurdles facing Obama’s plans to close Guantanamo.
