Britain is planning a diplomatic surge to counter ‘extremism’ in the Middle East and South Asia.
David Miliband, the British foreign secretary, announced a deeper engagement in conflict-prevention and resolution this week.
This announcement coincided with a survey conducted recently which concluded that six out of 10 Arabs no longer feel Britain has sufficient credibility to be a major player in the Middle East.
Inside Story looks at the British role in the Middle East and asks whether this recent initiative is part of a bold international approach or merely an attempt to save face.
