The pressure to secure a Middle East peace deal is becoming more urgent. On the second day of George Bush’s tour of the region, and a day after he held talks with Ehud Olmert, Israel’s prime minister, the US president said lasting peace between the Israelis and Palestinians could happen this year.
Bush said he will redefine the future of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict because UN resolutions have not worked in the past.
Do Palestinians and Israelis see Bush as a suitable broker? Or has the US exhausted its influence here? And is this the end of the UN’s role in finding a solution?
