Egyptian authorities have arrested 18 members of the country’s largest opposition group for holding an unauthorised meeting.
It is the latest in a series of crackdowns which have seen more than 550 members of the Muslim Brotherhood detained in recent months.
Several are also on trial in a military court.
Why is the Brotherhood so popular? And what does the government’s reaction say about the Egyptian regime?
Inside Story looks at the details.
