Lebanon veers towards an uncertain political future following the parliament’s failure to elect a new president.

In the face of a constitutional crisis, the Siniora government and the opposition have both staked their claims on power.

The government, backed by Western powers, says it has the constitutional legitimacy to assume the president’s perogatives until a new president is elected.

The opposition, backed by both Syria and Iran, says the government is illegitimate. Syria was allegedly preventing a deal from being made before this week’s Middle East conference in Annapolis.
