Thousands of illegal immigrants die in an attempt to flee their poor countries to make a better life in rich countries.

Illegal immigrants continue to flow from poor countries to rich countries in want of a better life. But the journey is not always safe and thousands die in their attempt to flee.
Some argue that the immigration policies of developed countries, which concentrate mainly on policing borders, actually fuel illegal immigration. They argue that the long term solution to the problem lies in working to improve conditions in developing countries.
Is this the only way of stemming the flow of illegal immigrants?
