Inside Iraq

Who will lead Iraq?

Inside Iraq asks if post-election uncertainty will ignite violence.

When the election results were announced, Iraqis thought that the victorious Iyad Allawi, Iraq’s former prime minister, would be called upon to form the next government.

Instead, his rivals gathered in Tehran to form a solid alliance to block him from becoming prime minister.

The wrangling over who will lead the country could now take months and the government will certainly experience a severe paralysis. But will the resulting vacuum ignite further violence?

Inside Iraq, with guests Saad al-Mutallibi, a political advisor to the ministry of national dialogue, and Mundher al-Adhami, a research fellow at King’s College London, asks: How can the current situation be resolved, will Allawi become Iraq’s next prime minister and will Tehran decide Iraq’s fate?
