Raila Odinga, new prime minister of Kenya, says his country will take a while to recover |
Kenyans have been celebrating a power sharing agreement that could end the country’s two month political crisis.
This comes after Kenya’s worst period of violence since independence. More than a thousand people have reportedly been killed as a result of last December’s disputed election in what was previously seen as one of Africa’s most stable countries.
A coalition government comprising members of the current ruling party led by Mwai Kibaki, and opposition will now be formed.
President Kibaki will retain his position and Raila Odinga, whose Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is the largest in parliament, will assume the new role of prime minister.
Odinga joins Sir David to discuss the power sharing agreement and the challenges facing Kenya in the months ahead.

Mike Gravel accuses the US electoral process of being undemocratic |
In the Democratic race for president, the momentum is firmly with Senator Barack Obama after winning each of the ten primaries since ‘Super Tuesday’. This leaves Hilary Clinton with an uphill struggle to win the Democratic nomination.
Mike Gravel, a former US senator from Alaska, declared his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for president in 2006.
Gravel’s idiosyncratic polices and fiery debating style has earned him plenty of plaudits but the 77-year old is nowhere to be seen in the polls and is yet to pick up a delegate.
Gravel talks to Sir David about the forthcoming elections and his struggling campaign.
Gravel dismisses the prospects for change under a Clinton or Obama presidency.

Mushahid Hussain discusses Pakistan’s political future after the country’s elections |
Pakistan recently held its long-awaited national and provincial elections. These came after a tumultuous few months in Pakistan’s post-colonial history that saw Benazir Bhutto assassinated and President Pervez Musharraf suspend the constitution.
The latter was widely condemned and almost certainly played a part in the pro-Musharraf Pakistan Muslim League’s (Q) poor showing in the polls.
The two main opposition parties, the Pakistan People’s Party of the late Benazir Bhutto and the Pakistan Muslim League (N), led by Nawaz Sharif, won a clear majority in the elections. The result means a coalition government is inevitable and puts President Musharraf’s political future in serious doubt.
Mushahid Hussain, the Secretary General of the PML-Q, joins Sir David to discuss the outcome of the elections and Pakistan’s political future.

Vladimir Bukovsky discusses his imprisonment during the Soviet era
|
On Sunday Russia will go to the polls to elect a new president as Vladimir Putin nears the end of his second term.
The man elected will almost certainly be the Putin backed candidate and current deputy prime minister Dmitry Medvedev.
Putin is constitutionally barred from running for a third term, but has said he would accept the position of prime minister in any new administration.
This would allow Putin to retain some degree of influence and casts doubt on Medvedev’s autonomy if he is elected.
Vladimir Bukovsky, the former Soviet political dissident, author and activist, was one of a number of opposition candidates disqualified from running in this election.
Bukovsky talks to Sir David about the forthcoming elections, President Putin’s popularity and his imprisonment during the Soviet era.
