General Sir Mike Jackson
 |
General Sir Mike Jackson |
General Jackson, the former head of the British army, talks to Sir David about his comments on US military strategy in Iraq and his criticism of Donald Rumsfeld, the former US defence secretary, which made headlines earlier in September.
His comments, which represent the most outspoken criticism of US military policy in Iraq to come from a senior British officer, come ahead of the release of his autobiography, Soldier.
In
his autobiography, General Jackson accuses Rumsfeld of refusing to deploy enough troops to maintain law and order after the removal of Saddam Hussein.
He also claims that Rumsfeld dismissed detailed plans for the running of post-conflict Iraq that had been drawn up by the US state department.
General Jackson also discusses the recent assessment of the conflict in Iraq by General David Petraeus, the top US commander in Iraq, saying that the US general was being a realist in terms of the situation in the country.
Naomi Klein

Naomi Klein |
Canadian journalist, author and anti-globalisation campaigner Naomi Klein talks to Sir David about her new book, The Shock Doctrine, exposing what she describes as the rise of “disaster capitalism” and the exploitation of people’s suffering for political and financial gain.
Klein tells Sir David how the book examines major crises such as war, terror attacks and how natural disasters have been harnessed to impose radical free market ideology, citing examples such as Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005 and the war in Iraq.
