abuse in Malaysia

The sexual abuse of young children is one of those crimes that causes immediate outrage and condemnation. Yet despite this month marking the 18th anniversary of the convention of the rights of the child, there is still a wall of silence surrounding the crime in many parts of the world. Malaysia is one nation waking up to the horrific reality of child abuse, after the rape and murder of a nine year old girl.

This week Shiulie Ghosh is joined by Dr Farah Nini Dusuki, an advisor to Unicef and the vice president of the Malaysian Association of Child Protection. She talks to Everywoman about the scale of child abuse in Malaysia and explains why is it so difficult getting people to talk about and confront the problem of child sex abuse.
