The Notre Dame in Paris survived wars, revolutions and political turmoil. But it took only hours to devastate nearly nine centuries of history.

The World Heritage site was being renovated when it was engulfed by fire.

For many French people, Notre Dame is a symbol of their identity. President Emmanuel Macron is promising to rebuild the cathedral and make it more beautiful than ever in just five years.

How should that restoration be handled? And what lessons have been learned on how to preserve historical sites?
