African Union in name only?
Leaders from 54 countries seek common ground on continent-wide challenges.
The issues are as vast and complex as the countries that make up the continent.
Leaders of the African Union are in South Africa to address challenges, both collective and individual.
From the wider problems of security and immigration to more specific matters, such as the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, and the current political upheaval in Burundi.
That latter development are again casting the spotlight on African leaders trying to remain in power by changing their countries’ constitutions.
Events on Sunday were overshadowed by the presence of Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on war crimes and genocide charges.
The controversy added another dimension to the bigger question of whether the AU is achieving its original goals for greater unity and good governance?
