Tracking down the Paris attackers

French forces raid a Paris suburb hunting for suspects, but what do such operations tell us about intelligence failures?

Early on Wednesday morning, residents of the Saint-Denis suburb in Paris woke up to the sounds of more gunfire and explosions – as police raided homes searching for suspects.

Among the targets, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the suspected ringleader of Friday’s attacks which killed at least 129 and wounded hundreds more.

Two suspects were killed in the raid, while eight suspects were arrested.

What do the raids tell us about intelligence failures in Europe?

And what about the communities where the suspects were holed up?
