Web extra: Shashi Tharoor on Kashmir

The leading Indian politician says Kashmir not ‘fundamental problem in [the] India and Pakistan relationship’.

In this web extra, Mehdi Hasan presses leading Indian politician Shashi Tharoor on the dispute over Kashmir. “The fundamental problem in [the] India and Pakistan relationship is not Kashmir,” the MP tells Hasan. “It is the nature of the Pakistani state.”

Asked if the Kashmir situation could be resolved through a third party Tharoor says, “Well, first of all, I don’t think we have any problem understanding each other, the Pakistanis and us. We don’t need a third party.”

Tharoor also says “Indians have been the first to acknowledge” the wrongs committed in Kashmir.

Hasan challenges Tharoor on that statement, pointing to an Amnesty International report that states, “not a single member of the security forces deployed in Jammu and Kashmir over the past 25 years has been tried for alleged human rights violations in a civilian court.”
